The jury’s motivation: Den bergtagna is Victoria Benedictsson’s lightly disguised story of her relationship with Danish literary critic, Georg Brandes. In the glow of an oversized tile oven, women and men of the Victorian age are testing their modern ideas concerning freedom and love. A mixture of social satire, chamber of horrors and tragedy performed with a detailed sympathy for the esthetics of melodrama.

Den bergtagna is tragedy about someone shadow boxing with herself, about her wild and ever present longing for meaning, about her absurd attachment to her own identity which she uses as a shield against emptiness. The play, unfinished, was found among Victoria Benedictsson’s papers after her suicide in 1888 and was subsequently finished by her friend, Axel Lundegård. On the envelope containing the manuscript Victoria Benedictsson wrote: “I want to live, even if it kills me.”
