En herrgårdssägen (A Tale of a Manor)

The jury’s motivation: In their chain of adaptations of the work of Selma Lagerlöf, Västanå Teater and the Stinnerbom family (director: Leif, costumes: Inger, music: Magnus, choreography: Ola) have, in En Herrgårdssaga, found the ultimate text for their own theatrical esthetics. Here, with music as a nexus for catharsis and the release of energy, with their inimitable scenic fantasy, Västanå transforms Lagerlöf’s story into melodrama, in the finest and original meaning of the word.

En herrgårdssaga (From a Swedish Homestead), arguably Selma Lagerlöfs most perfect novel, is the story of the intertwined fates of two young people. Young Gunnar Hede, student and fiddler, loses his sanity and is transformed into The Billy Goat. With his fiddling he revives the lifeless orphan, Ingrid Berg, and delivers her from her casket in the church graveyard. Both share the same tendency to run away from life, to turn inwards into the dark corners of the soul, to long for death and oblivion, where consciousness ceases to exist.
